The new building for the children’s hospital blends into the campus of Essen University Hospital as a calm, light cube in a central location. The clarity of the concept and the friendly design should reflect a high level of competence in content and a secure ambience suitable for children. In front of all the wards are colourfully accentuated, compartment-like loggias – playfully relaxed, in different positions relative to the façade alignment. These give the children’s hospital its unmistakable outward identity.

The space concept takes into account the interests of the young patients and the medical staff. With play areas, family rooms and rooming-in provisions, places of balance that promote healing are created for the patients and their families. Nuclear medicine and radiopharmacy are realised on a further construction site. A centre that is equipped to the latest standards is being created here for the research and treatment of thyroid and oncological disorders.
