Using resources cooperatively
The compact new building for the Fraunhofer Institute for IME develops a new site and, in accordance with its exposed location, has equal façades on all sides. In the centre of the almost square building is a glass-roofed atrium with a spiral staircase. Around this, offices and communication zones are grouped on the upper floors. The delimited laboratory area – with some light from internal areas above the atrium – forms the north-western part of the building.

The building concept promotes cooperation and synergies between the research areas, whether in the technical area through shared use of the central functions in the laboratory clusters or in the social area through open galleries on the central atrium. Moreover, the social spaces of the individual research areas are brought together on the fourth floor. Instead of the otherwise usual, solitary kitchenettes, a shared communal area is created here with a roof terrace for all staff.
